City Power works to resolve Eskom debt dispute

JOHANNESBURG - City Power says its turnaround initiatives are starting to show results, with electricity losses declining significantly in recent months.

The utility reports that losses have dropped from 40.5 percent in July 2025 to just above 25 percent in April this year, marking progress in its efforts to stabilise the system.

Despite the improvement, City Power is still under financial pressure as it scrambles to raise about R5-billion owed to Eskom.

An additional R1.5-billion is due to Eskom in early June.

Meanwhile, Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa will meet with City Power and Eskom officials.

This follows Eskom's threat to cut supply to Johannesburg over the alleged debt.

City Power has, however, challenged the accuracy of the figures and has taken the matter to court in the past.

Ramokgopa has also proposed appointing an independent body to audit the accounts and verify the disputed amounts.
